Research and Development
A thirst for knowledge! This spirit goes back a long way in the region and has led to the emergence of a vigorous research landscape in Central Germany. Over 100 research centres – including 19 Fraunhofer, 14 Leibniz and 14 Max Planck institutes – make up a much sought-after pool of expertise for new developments and highly qualified staff. Public spending on R&D in Central Germany is substantial. And the potential of Central Germany’s research sector is increasingly apparent from the cutting-edge products and services produced there. Furthermore, many of the institutions in the region are internationally respected as some of the leading institutions in their field.
Research centres in Central Germany
The science landscape in Central Germany is shaped by a variety of institutions and cutting-edge research institutions. The CGMR Science Atlas contains a comprehensive list of the region’s institutes and research centres along with details of their main fields of work.
The Science Atlas
If innovative start-ups are to succeed, technology transfer is often essential in order to give their commercial ideas a strong foundation. CGMR supports knowledge transfer between partners by means of a wide range of networks of excellence and cooperation projects between industry and science. This focusing of existing R&D resources can be a crucial success factor, especially for SMEs. As a result, outstanding knowledge clusters in sectors such as microelectronics, solar energy, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and the chemical industry have all taken root in the region.
CGMR initiates and supports scientific collaboration networks with both academic and economic objectives. The main aim is to benefit research and science institutions. Thanks to coordinated cooperation between all the institutions, universities and institutes can meet the needs of regional businesses even more closely and work with them (including on specific applications and projects) within new R&D projects.
